Native to the Eastern and Southern United States but when planted according to its designated conditions, Astilbe does very well here.  We live in the Carson Valley below the Sierra Mountains at 4500 feet. Astilbe prefers partial to full shade with protection so its happy place is tucked in a NE corner of the house where it catches the dappled sun on its rich foliage and unique pink spires. This is a long-lived perennial in this microclimate and does even better with divisions every 3-5 years.
